Previously a 75m strip of open ground that housed with four garages and a single two-storey dwelling, Coverton Mews was a rationalised residential scheme of contrasting front and rear elevations. Located along a slim site adjoining the boundary of St. George’s Hospital in Tooting, the proposal was designed to be sympathetic to the surrounding context. The scheme providing 8 dwellings, reflects the scale and rhythm of the existing terraced houses along the street while creating modern, high quality accommodation. The houses were pre-fabricated off-site before construction to speed up the construction process. The design is based on a series of recessed and punctuated forms alongside the use of contrasting materials, which was able to provide rhythm to the street elevations and give a modern approach to the terrace properties opposite. The variation between front and rear elevations is key to the success of this project.
