Overview
2 Fann Street by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon (1968) is a Grade II listed tower block of 17 storeys, purpose built as a hostel. Despite its status as an iconic Barbican Tower and its hostel designation, Redrow purchased the building for conversion to 74 privately owned apartments.
Consent was given providing the tower lost none of its intrinsic design aesthetic. The resulting new Barbican residences share the same eye for detail as the estate’s mid-century apartments – as exemplified in the concrete reveals and brass panelling of the landings, and clean interior lines of polished plaster and timber. The exterior walls of the building have remained unchanged and its listed features retained.
The process of working sensitively with the buildings existing fabric, whilst ensuring that the employer’s brief for modern, high-end apartments proved an on going challenge
