Overview
St Martins Lane was Ian Schrager’s first project outside of the USA. The office was employed to bring the key aspects of quality, production, execution, local knowledge and a little innovation to this 1960’s office conversion.
Light plays a huge part in the character of the St Martin’s Lane Hotel. In the public areas on the ground floor, pools of light are used to lead people into and to differentiate between various areas. An advanced glazing technology allowed floor to ceiling windows in the guests’ rooms. This, when combined with the individual room control of coloured light, made for an original and continually changing street facing facade. Without compromising comfort and luxury the 204-bedroom hotel is an exercise in pure sensory drama and theatre. That the hotel remains a credible icon of fashion over 20 years later is testament to the creative vision of the design team.
